What to Do and Wear in Croatia in the Spring and Summer

While it's been a few years since my last visit, I can still feel the wind blowing through my hair as I cruise down the Croatian coastline. From savoring an authentic local meal to feeling the sun's warmth on my feet as I stepped across smooth rocks at the pebble beaches, Croatia is a place that continues to beckon me back. But before you pack your bags and head to this beautiful country, it's essential to know what to do and what to wear during your trip to Croatia. This guide will provide you with all the information you need to make your visit to "The Land of a Thousand Islands," one for the books.

Weather and What to Wear in Croatia

The best time to visit Croatia largely depends on what you're looking to experience. Summer, especially from June to August, is the most popular time for tourists due to the warm weather and lively coastal towns. However, I visited Croatia in spring, and it was absolutely fantastic. The weather was still pleasantly warm, yet without the peak season crowds. If visiting Croatia in the spring or summer, you'll want to pack light, breathable clothing. I recommend flowy, comfortable pieces such as baby doll-style tops and ruffle shorts that allow you to stay cool and stylish.

Don’t forget to bring a bucket hat — it’s an absolute staple for protecting yourself from the sun while adding a trendy touch.  A locket necklace adds effortless charm, while gladiator sandals are your go-to for coastal strolls or cobblestone paths. Toss your essentials in a woven tote, and you're set.

For long days of walking, like exploring the city walls in Dubrovnik, an above-the-knee sleeveless dress paired with sneakers and a crossbody bag will keep you comfortable yet chic. Dress for ease and warmth, and you’ll seamlessly fit in with the locals.

Where to Go in Croatia

Croatia is located in Southeast Europe, bordering Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. The country has been thrown into the tourism spotlight since serving as one of the main filming locations for the hit TV show Game of Thrones. It's known for its stunning coastline along the Adriatic Sea, picturesque islands, historic cities, and charming traditional villages.

The easiest way to make your way around the country is by renting a car or joining a tour group. Whether you're interested in exploring ancient Roman ruins or lounging on the beach with a drink in hand, there's something for everyone in Croatia. With so many incredible activities to choose from, it can be overwhelming. To help you get started, I've put together a list of must-do activities when visiting Croatia. Throw on your jumpsuit and slides, and let’s head out on an adventure!

Zagreb

Zagreb is the energetic capital of Croatia. You'll see how it effortlessly combines its identity as a modern metropolis while still preserving its history.

Start your visit in the Upper Town. This area is home to cobblestone streets and landmarks like St. Mark’s Church, with its colorful tiled roof. You'll also find the Lotrščak Tower, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city.

Take a stroll through Ban Jelačić Square and stop by Dolac Market. Known as the "belly of the city," the market offers fresh produce and a plethora of local delicacies for you to try.

Additionally, the Museum of Broken Relationships is a uniquely emotional and thought-provoking exhibition. Or, escape to Maksimir Park, one of the oldest parks in all of Europe. Whether you’re enjoying a coffee at one of the city’s many cafés or exploring its long past, a trip to the capital city is a must.

Split

As Croatia's premiere coastal city, Split offers an unbeatable mix of history, culture, and scenery. Start your visit at Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the heart of the city, its ancient Roman architecture blends in with modern shops and cafés.

Stroll along the Riva Promenade, a bustling waterfront lined with palm trees, restaurants, and lively street performers. For jaw-dropping views, hike up Marjan Hill, often referred to as "the lungs of Split."

Don’t miss a visit to the local beaches like Bačvice, famous for its sandy shore and crystal-clear waters. Explore the charming old town with its narrow cobblestone streets, shops where you can find great earrings and necklaces, and traditional Dalmatian cuisine. Whether you’re soaking in bygone days or relaxing by the Adriatic Sea, Split delivers an unforgettable experience for every traveler.

Makarska

Makarska, nestled along the stunning Dalmatian coast, is a lesser-known gem worth exploring. The majestic Biokovo Mountain and the glistening Adriatic Sea surround the city.

My favorite thing about Makarska was its unique pebble beaches. Unlike sandy shores, the smooth, warm pebbles add a distinctive touch. Walking barefoot along the shoreline was incredibly soothing, with the clear, turquoise water gently lapping at my feet.

After a day at the beach, I enjoyed an incredible local meal at Restaurant Hrpina Makarska. This cozy, tucked-away spot served phenomenal dishes with fresh ingredients and authentic Dalmatian flavors. Whether you’re exploring the quaint streets, lying low at the beach, or indulging in incredible cuisine, Makarska promises to leave a lasting impression.

Exploring the Walls in Dubrovnik

A visit to Dubrovnik is incomplete without walking along its iconic city walls, which famously served as a backdrop for King's Landing in Game of Thrones. These ancient walls encircle the Old Town and provide views of the city’s terracotta rooftops, the coastline, and the nearby Lokrum Island.

Spanning nearly 1.2 miles, the walls feature fortresses, towers, and battlements that whisper stories of the city’s past and medieval fortifications. Fans of the series will delight in recognizing filming locations, such as the Red Keep and the Battle of Blackwater Bay. Beyond their cinematic fame, the walls provide a unique perspective of Dubrovnik’s blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site that features a series of cascading lakes and waterfalls. The park is divided into upper and lower lakes, and visitors can explore them via wooden walkways and hiking trails.

One highlight is taking a boat ride across the largest lake, Kozjak. The park is home to several species of birds, fish, and even bears. Pack a picnic and get lost in Plitvice Lakes National Park!

Mostar Old Town

Technically located just across the border from Croatia in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this historic area is an Instagram-lover's dream. The centerpiece of the town is the iconic Stari Most or Old Bridge.

Initially built in the 16th century by the Ottoman Empire, the bridge gracefully spans the Neretva River. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage site that symbolizes reconciliation and unity. For an added thrill, watch daring locals perform bridge dives into the waters nearly 80 feet below.
